Once you have found a local dentist accepting new NHS patients, the best thing to do is call the practice. Ask if they are still accepting new NHS patient and enquire about their registration process. Most dental practices will require you to attend to fill out a registration form before you can book an appointment. The form will typically ask for your name, date of birth, address, phone number, email address and medical history including a list of any current medication you take. You do not usually need your NHS number.
Typically there will be a wait of several weeks for new patient examination appointments. If you need any dental treatment, this usually will be planned at your initial appointment. You will then need to book again for the treatment at a later date.
If you have dental/facial pain, swelling, infection or bleeding then you may need an emergency dental appointment.
